Sharing Biotech Tools
with Smaller Schools
The 2005 Advances in Bioscience Education (ABE) workshop was held
from June 6 to June 24, 2005. Students and faculty from
Leeward, Kapi‘olani, and Windward Community Colleges and Hawai‘i
Pacific University had an opportunity to learn a variety of
biotechnology techniques in the context of plant biology research.
The workshop was featured in the College of Tropical Agriculture and
Human Resources (CTAHR) homepage in July 2005. Please

Dean's Notes -- June 9, 2004
MULTI-YEAR SUMMER BIOTECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP PLANNED
Faculty members from Kapiolani Community College,
Leeward Community
College, Windward Community College, Maui Community
College, and
Chaminade University recently met with CTAHR's David
Christopher and
LCC's Kabi Neupane to plan a curriculum development
workshop that will
begin next year. The Advances in Bioscience Education
workshops that
will take place in summers 2005 through 2007 are part
of a research
project funded by the National Science Foundation,
"Functional Genomics
of the Protein Disulfide Isomerase Family in
Arabidopsis Plants." The
project allows research institutions such as UH-Manoa
to disseminate
knowledge and technical skills that will aid faculty
members from small
colleges that lack research programs in developing and
expanding their
biosciences curricula. The workshop will focus on
genomics,
biotechnology, and molecular and cellular biology.
Nine to ten faculty
members are expected to attend; each faculty member
will bring with them
a student to mentor. Prior attendance at the recent
planning meeting is
not a prerequisite for next summer's workshop, but
participants must be
from a small college. For more information, please
