The 2005 summer workshop was held from June 6 to June 24, 2005. In the first week, participants learned some basic molecular techniques including DNA and protein isolation, gel electrophoresis, Southern blotting and PCR. T-DNA mapping of PDI knockout mutants were performed in the second week. In the final week, participants learned  fluorescent and electron microscopy.

Students and faculty from three of Oahu’s community colleges and Hawaii Pacific University joined Leeward Community College’s Kabi Neupane and CTAHR’s David Christopher at the 2005 Advances in Bioscience Education workshop. Back row from left: Ikaika Lum (student, LCC), Catherine Unabia (faculty, Hawai‘i Pacific University), Nani Nikcevich (student, HPU), Pamela Gribbins (student, WCC), Aargon Steel (student, KCC), John Berestecky (faculty, KCC), David Christopher (faculty, MBBE), Kabi Neupane (faculty, LCC).

ABE Summer 2005 Workshop in Pictures!!

After discussion at the first ABE workshop in Summer 2004, the participating faculty identified the following three relevant research experiences for themselves and their students:

  • Basic molecular techniques (DNA, RNA, Protein isolation and analysis),

  • T-DNA mapping, and

  • immunodetection of proteins via fluorescence and electron microscopy.

Accordingly, the 2005 Summer workshop included one week for basic molecular techniques; T-DNA mapping of pdi knockout mutants, and immuno-detection of PDI proteins via fluorescence and electron microscopy.

These hands-on exercises and modules have been posted at the ABE website for broader dissemination. Other digital formats (CD-ROM, lab manuals)  will be developed and made available to students and faculty as a source of reference.
